How to Select your RPA (Robotic Process Automation) Tool

A Real Life Experience

I was on a call the other day with a prospect. I watched as she was processing and filtering out our sales pitch against all of the other sales pitches that she’s heard as she weighs considerations for her organization’s RPA program. I felt for her. There is so much to filter, and she doesn’t know what she doesn’t know, so it’s near impossible for her to ask the right questions.

Based on the tools I’ve used, tools that my organization has used and internal industry chatter, here’s what I can share about selecting the right RPA tool for your organization, cost notwithstanding. When you’re looking at the top Robotic Process Automation (RPA) tools: Automation Anywhere, Blue Prism, Microsoft, UiPath etc. – they all work. Each of them has their own specialty, so to speak. Those specialties are where you will find the tool that’s the best fit for you.

Points of Consideration for Choosing your Tool

1. Who is going to be building the automations?

If your dev team consists of veteran developers, they are going to prefer a more technical tool like UiPath or Automation Anywhere. If your team will be zero to limited development experience, they will prefer a tool like Blue Prism.

2. Who is going to be supporting the automations?

As someone who is at the beginning stages of your RPA journey, you may not have considered who will be providing production support, but it is a factor that should be considered when choosing your tool. Similar to the dev team, the level of development experience of your support team should be considered. The more technical teams will prefer a more technical tool. The more business-oriented teams will prefer a more visual tool.

3. Talk to your IT team about infrastructure to be sure that there aren’t any obstacles there.

Sometimes the hardest part of any drastic change is simply getting started. What can hold you back is getting stuck on “Which technology should I use?”. Each RPA tool specializes in different areas and with the right implementation, guidance, and approach, they will all work and provide you with a positive return on investment.
