What is your story? How did you get to where you are today?

Growing up I was always interested in Math and Science. I started college as a math major and soon switched into engineering. My mentor in college told me about industrial engineering and about how it drives process efficiency. After doing some research on my own, I decided it was a good fit for me.

I landed a job out of college in a rotational program at AT&T in Atlanta, GA. They had started a Citizen Developer RPA initiative and came to me and a group of new hires asking if we were interested in becoming full time developers for the new RPA program. Next thing I knew I was a full-time developer, primarily using Automation Anywhere – and I became  pretty good at it. Both myself and my colleague were named the top developers in the Southeast for AT&T based on financial results.

I ended up moving to New York while working at AT&T. I loved RPA and wanted to keep doing it but was ready to move on from my career at AT&T. I didn’t realize other full-time opportunities existed in RPA until I came across Reveal Group. I was hired at RG and soon after became a strong Blue Prism developer and became proficient in UiPath, as well.

What are some of the most exciting automation projects you have worked on?

I enjoyed working for our client, Ulta Beauty, not only because I’m an avid consumer but because of how I grew my skills tackling the complexity of their process. We automated their credit card account reconciliation process, a tedious accounting process that takes 4 days out of every month. This project ended up being one of my biggest accomplishments. As a result of the automation we built, our client at Ulta Beauty was relieved and no longer burdened with the tedious and detailed process that took 32 hours out of her month.

If there is such a thing, can you describe a typical day for you?

It depends on what stage we’re on in the project lifecycle, but as an example, during the Build stage of a project, I start my day by joining internal team calls to discuss client projects. I then jump right into the Blue Prism platform and work on object or process build using the documentation I created in the Define stage to guide me. I’m usually heads-down in build mode but also take client calls throughout the day for project updates and to provide solutions to any issues that may arise.

Are there any common misconceptions about adopting automation in the workforce?

Absolutely. The most common I’ve heard is “You’re taking people’s jobs”. I’ve never worked with a client who ended up losing their job because of an automation we’ve built. Automation is giving them opportunity to focus on work that provides greater value to their day, and alleviating them from repetitive, mundane tasks. We’re improving their overall work experience

What advice would you give to someone looking into a career in Intelligent Automation?

The field is constantly growing and it’s not going to slow down. You don’t have to be an expert in every area of RPA, but you can build your awareness of the industry and expand your knowledge. Focus on an area that you excel in and learn new skills throughout your journey. Automation is going to be the future of the workforce and is a very exciting field to be a part of.
